"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." Proverbs 22:9
Bread of Life has already been impacted by federal spending cuts to USDA that meant the loss of more than 2.8 million meals for the Greater Boston Food Bank network of agencies. Dramatic cuts and changes have been made to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aka "food stamps," which is relied upon by one in six Massachusetts residents to help put food on their table. SNAP pumps money directly into the Massachusetts economy as SNAP recipients purchase food at grocery stores and local markets.
Debates on government budgets can raise the question: who are these people in Massachusetts who need these supports? Why can't they always get sufficient food for their needs on their own? In our area, access to food is largely dependent on money. Lower-income families and seniors who are generally eligible for SNAP and who often seek Bread of Life's services, are usually experiencing two or more of these factors: Lower incomes: low-wage jobs, a disability that hinders working, job loss, unreliable work, financial emergencies or systemic barriers in building wealth. High cost of living: the cost of essentials like food, housing, health care, utilities and child and dependent care can stretch already tight budgets. Community factors: limited access to transportation and well-resourced schools, or living in unsafe neighborhoods, create significant barriers for access to nutritious food.
These are challenging times and the need for your support is greater than ever. Your generous gifts of your time, food and money to Bread of Life translate into sharing your food with those who are poor amongst us.
Thank you for your heart of caring, and for your prayers for all to be fed.
God bless you,
Gabriella Snyder Stelmack, Executive Director
